Uribe will entlassene Arbeiter von Emcali aushungern

Uribe tries to starve sacked workers

Cali, 15th December 2004

Not content with illegally sacking 51 workers, Uribe and the Management of Emcali have also failed to pay the sacked workers their severance entitlement, which includes money they have saved with the company over many years. The money should have been paid 3 months after they were sacked but has still not been paid and the sacked workers have been given no indication of when it will be. As if this wasn't enough Emcali have also rushed to court and obtained a judgement preventing them from collecting the levy being paid by Sintraemcali members to support their sacked comrades.

The consequences for the sacked union members have been grave, they are already experiencing financial hardship, some have lost their houses, others can't afford to send their children to school and some are suffering physical illnesses due to the stress they are experiencing. The situation for these workers will deteriorate severely if they are prevented from receiving the financial lifeline offered to them by the levy on Sintraemcali's members. Despite the economic hardship however the sacked workers have remained loyal to the union, attending meetings and helping to keep moral high amongst all union members.

The attempts by the management to undermine Sintraemcali have gone much further however, they were in such a hurry to stop collecting the levy for the sacked workers that they also stopped collecting union dues causing further financial difficulties for the union. The management have also tried to set up a bosses union in direct competition with Sintraemcali, it has only managed to recruit a derisory 26 members. Sintraemcali members have treated this new union! with scorn refusing to let it into the workplace to talk to them and in one instance drenching them with water.

Despite the current situation Sintraemcali are confident that they will get their sacked members reinstated, the further attempt to undermine the union has angered the members and looks set to backfire. However Sintraemcali desperately need international support, both politically and financially. Political support is need to put pressure on Uribe to comply with Colombian law, whilst financial support is need to support the sacked workers until they are reinstated.
