SOLIDARITY APPEAL WORKERS OF FIAT POLAND

Amsterdam, 14 February 2001

Dear friends,

Yesterday evening we were informed that FIAT has announced the sacking of 750 workers of FIAT Poland in Bielsko Biala. The trade union Solidarity has demanded from management that they withdraw their plans and have launched a protest campaign against FIAT.

On February 6th, 2001, FIAT Poland management announced the dismissal of 750 workers of FIAT Poland to the workers and trade unions.

On February 7th, Solidarity sent a letter to FIAT Poland management demanding that they withdraw their announcement and guarantee that no involuntary redundancies will take place. The trade union argues that there is no dramatic economic or financial situation and that forced redundancies are therefore unnecessary. Solidarity has demanded that management withdraws its announcement before February 13th.

In support of their argument, FIAT workers have posted banners on all factory gates of FIAT Poland in Bielsko Biala and Tyche.

Until yesterday, management has not withdrawn its plans. Solidarity therefore asks now to send protest messages to FIAT management in Torino with copies to Solidarity and to Polish Television. A draft letter is added.

We therefore ask you to send this week letters of protest to FIAT top management in Bielsko Biala and Torino as well as to the local management in Bielsko Biala. Please send a copy of your letter of protest to the Solidarnosc branch at FIAT.

You should send your protest letters to:

Mr. Paolo Cantarella
President FIAT Spa
Torino, Italy
Fax: +39-011-6861802

Mr.Gianfrancesco Pavesi
Director FIAT Gesko Poland
Bielsko Biala, Poland
Fax: +48-33-8132751

Please send copies of your protest to:

Mr.Wieslaw Brzozka
President NSZZ Solidarnosc
At FIAT Poland
Fax: +48-33-8134108

Polish Television
Fax: +48-33-8165416

DRAFT PROTEST LETTER

To: Mr. Paolo Cantarella
President FIAT Spa
Torino, Italy
Fax: +39-011-6861802

Dear Sir,

We have been informed on the plans of FIAT management to dismiss 750 workers at its plants in Poland.

We want to express our sincere concern that FIAT has unilaterally announced its decision instead of first discussing and negotiating the situation with the trade unions. We demand that FIAT opens as soon as possible unconditional negotiations with the Polish trade unions and that in the meantime FIAT withdraws its decision to dismiss 750 workers.

Yours sincerely

Signed:

cc. Mr.Gianfrancesco Pavesi
Director FIAT Gesko Poland
