Dear friends,

Today we received a request from the trade union branch of NSZZ Solidarnosc at Fiat Polska in Bielsko Biala, Poland, to support them in their struggle for a new collective agreement.

Fiat Polska is the main European assembly plant of Fiat outside Italy, producing the Fiat Cinquecento model for the whole European market.

On December 31, 1999, the collective agreement between the Polish trade unions and Fiat expired. Although the unions tried to negotiate a new agreement since November, 1999, FIAT was only willing to start serious negotiations in April, 2000. Although agreement was reached on a wage increase, the company proposal was not acceptable to Solidarity, the major union in the plant, at a number of other points, and the company then broke off negotiations at the end of April, and has refused to re-open them since.

The company is now blackmailing the workers, refusing to pay them any wage increase by January 1, until Solidarity will sign the agreement on their conditions.

Solidarity has unsuccessfully tried to resolve the conflict peacefully and to resume negotiations. But Fiat has only hardened its position and is now accusing Solidarity of being intransigent.

Solidarity is therefore asking all of you to support them and to send letters to the management of Fiat Polska urging them to resume negotiations with the trade unions.
