214 Festnahmen bei Protesten

Eine Demonstration zu der der Gewerkschaftsbund CUT und die Nationale Studentenkonföderation im Rahmen eines Protestages gegen die Regierungspolitik in Valapraiso aufgerufen hatten wurden von den Carabineros mit Tränengas und Wasserwerfern aufgelöst. 214 der etwa 5-10.000 TeilnehmerInnen wurden festgenommen, sechs Menschen verletzt, zwei davon schwer.

Neben Studenten, Beschäftigten des öffentlichen Dienstes (vor allem LehrerInnen) nahmen auch Erwerbslose und Mapuche Aktivisten an den Demonstration teil.

Die Demonstration fand zum gleichen Zeitpunkt statt an dem der sozialdemokratische Präsident Lagos seine "Rede zur Lage der Nation" hielt. Der feierte in seiner Rede die Unterzeichnung eines Freihandelsabkommens mit der EU am 17.Mai, versprach ein Programm gegen Armut und Erwerbslosigkeit und rief Demonstranten auf, sich nicht zu maskieren.

214 ARRESTED IN PROTESTS

Agents of Chile's militarized Carabineros police used tear gas, water cannons and nightsticks to disperse between 5,000 and 10,000 demonstrators who marched on May 21 to the national

legislature in Valparaiso as part of a broad day of protest against government policies. The march was called by the Confederation of Students of Chile and the Unitary Workers Federation (CUT); participants included university students demanding a greater share of the budget, public employees and teachers demanding better salaries, unemployed people demanding jobs, indigenous Mapuches protesting for land rights, and activists fighting corporate globalization. A total of 214 people were reported arrested and six were injured, two of them seriously.

The protests were timed to coincide with President Ricardo Lagos' annual state of the union address to Congress. Lagos, a member of Chile's Socialist Party, expressed satisfaction with the May 17 signing of a "free trade" accord with the European Union, announced a plan to ease poverty and unemployment, and urged the protesters to be peaceful and not to cover their faces.
