Resolution der UAW Ortsgruppe 2151

Whereas, the victims of any military action in Iraq will be the children of working class families serving in the military, both ours and theirs;

Whereas, working families who are innocent noncombatants will suffer injuries, disease, and death;

Whereas, we do not believe that the ordinary working people of Iraq desire war against America;

Whereas, soldiers, the production workers of war, lose not only their jobs but also their lives while the rich profit;

Whereas, we as a union have no animosity toward the ordinary working men, women, and children of Iraq, or any other country;

Whereas, the billions of dollars committed to war deprive us of much needed funds for workers’ education, health care, housing, unemployment compensation, and Social Security;

Whereas, the drive for war serves as a distraction for the failing economy, corporate corruption, and layoffs;

Whereas, the use of weapons of mass destruction against Iraq is apt to increase the likelihood of retaliatory terrorist acts against Americans;

Whereas, we have been shown no convincing evidence linking the atrocity of 9/11 to the Iraqi people;

Whereas, Iraq does not pose an imminent threat to America;

Whereas, preemptive U.S. military action against Iraq undermines the civilized process for resolution of conflict between states, thereby jeopardizing the safety and security of the entire world, and future hopes of peace;

Whereas, organized labor has had an historic role in fighting for justice, equality, and international solidarity;

Therefore be it resolved, that UAW Local 2151 take the position that if we are to fight a war, let it be a war against Poverty, Ignorance, and Disease;

Be it further resolved, that we send a copy of this resolution to the President of the UAW and the President of the United States.
