Harassment of Missouri Prisoner Labor Union

Datum: 8 Jun 2002 13:38:42

Jerome White-Bey is the founder and president of the Missouri Prisoner Labor Union, an organization of Missouri prisoners and their outside supporters who are organizing around labor and other prison conditions in Missouri. Since the founding of the MPLU, Jerome has been subject to administrative harassment and retaliation. He was in the "hole" (administrative segregation) for two years following the formation of the MPLU. Only days after his release into the general population, he saved the life of a fellow MPLU member, who was attacked in the dining hall. The assailant was transferred to another prison and Jerome was sent to administrative segregation "for the safety and security of the institution."

Please write, e-mail, fax or call Gary B. Kempker, the Director of the Missouri Department of Corrections and demand that Jerome be released from segregation IMMEDIATELY and that the harassment against him be stopped. Below is a sample letter for faxing, mailing or e-mailing to Director Kempker.

Dear Mr. Kempker,

I am writing to bring your attention to the mistreatment and possible abuse of Jerome White-Bey,

#37479, presently incarcerated at the Jefferson City Correctional Center. Mr. White-Bey has been confined to administrative segregation indefinitely. The facilitys Superintendent Dormire has attempted to justify this action by claiming that Mr. White-Bey is confined in administrative segregation due to a history of assault. However, Mr. White-Beys prison record will show that prior to the August 28th, 2001, incident in which Mr. White-Bey saved the life of a prisoner who was being stabbed by another inmate, he had not received a conduct violation report since September 1986.

I demand that your office investigate this matter immediately and thoroughly. I believe that the only reason that Superintendent Dormire is keeping Mr. White-Bey in segregation is because of his political views and his involvement in organizing and leading the Missouri Prisoners Labor Union. I am demanding that Jerome White-Bey be released from segregation and, in light of his harassment of Mr. White-Bey, that Mr. Dormire resign from his position as superintendent of Jefferson City Correctional Center immediately.

Sincerely,

Cc: Jerome White-Bey #37479
