FORWARD TO THE STRIKE AGAINST PRIVATISATION ON 29-30 AUGUST!
BROADEN AND EXTEND THE CAMPAIGN UNTIL VICTORY IS ACHIEVED!

Why is the state criticizing the Cosatu leaders?

The state is criticizing the Cosatu leaders, not because of any fundamental differences with them, but in order to weaken the 2-day action of the 29-30th August 2001. The state realizes that there is a rising tide of resistance by the working class, and any national strike will increase the confidence of the working class and sharpen the class conflict. The state criticism of the Cosatu leaders boosts their legitimacy in the fight against privatization. The ANC is correct that the Cosatu leaders have already agreed to privatization. This can be seen by the way the leadership benefits from privatization itself, for example:

THE COSATU AND SACP LEADERS ARE ONLY FIGHTING PRIVATISATION DUE TO THE MASSIVE PRESSURE FROM THE WORKING CLASS! GIVEN HALF AN OPPORTUNITY, THIS LEADERSHIP WILL CUT A DEAL AND BETRAY THE STRUGGLE.

The Govt knows this! The Cosatu and SACP leaders know where their bread is being buttered. There should be no illusion in the commitment of the Cosatu and SACP leaders.

What's at stake in the struggle against privatization?

The struggle against privatization is not just about job losses. NO! The struggle is much broader than this. IT IS POLITICAL! At stake is the principle of common ownership for common needs versus private ownership for self-interest and individual profit! Under capitalism, private ownership is at the expense of the working class and fellow poor. The system is based on the continued impoverishment of the masses. Privatization means the greater impoverishment of the poor for the enrichment of the rich! Capitalist society is irretrievably divided into 2 classes. One has to be either for the working class or for the capitalist class. The ANC govt, through GEAR and other policies, is on the side of the capitalist. GEAR economic policy has caused havoc in the working class and has been the main instrument of our greater suffering, yet the ANC claims to stand for the poor. They are only fooling themselves! The true role of the state stands exposed as the direct agent of imperialism-capitalism! The ANC govt is nothing more than the paid local lackey of imperialism.

The Cosatu leaders are with the capitalists but pretend to be with the workers. Why do we say so?

a) Privatization affects the entire working class, irrespective of union or political affiliation - they should long ago have called a Workers' Summit of all working class formations to map out a Programme of Action;

b) They should long ago have mobilized allied sectors, eg students and the unemployed

c) A special effort should have been made to mobilize and unite with the white working class, instead of abandoning them to the forces of reaction;

d) A full-scale GENERAL STRIKE should have been called and not a stayaway;

e) There should have been an effective Programme of Action of strikes and payment boycotts until privatization is stopped and previous privatization reversed;

f) There should have been established INDEPENDENT ANTI-PRIVATIZATION COMMITTEES across all working class residential areas and in all industrial areas

WORKERS INTERNATIONAL VANGUARD LEAGUE UNCONDITIONALLY SUPPORTS THE 2-DAY ACTION AGAINST PRIVATIZATION. The campaign should be extended on the basis of addressing the above 6 points. We call on all activists and working class organizations to contact us for taking forward the plan of setting up of the independent committees and the advancing of the above programme.
