Urgent Message from Korea: 52 electricity workers laid off! President of railway union arrested!

6 days into the strike!

The electricity workers are relentlessly continuing their strikes, in spite of the managements' intimidations and threats. The 5,600 workers have spread around the nation to avoid crackdown and arrests, while family members are demonstrating in central Seoul. The management has ordered the workers to return to work, but the workers are not giving in. The bosses at the Electric Power Corp. have now decided to penalise and lay-off 52 workers who led the strikes. They are to be laid off and replaced immediately.

Also, the president of the Korea Railway Workers' Union, Kim Jae-Gil, has been arrested for leading the 'illegal' strikes. Arrest warrants are out for dozens more. There are rumours that riot police will soon be sent into Myeongdong Cathedral where union leaders are camping, and force will be used to break up the strikes.

In the meantime, the government remains firm in its stance that it will continue with privatisations.

Please send messages and letters of support to the workers who are now facing repression from both the company and the police.

Also send letters of protest to the Korean government, urging them to withdraw privatisation plans.
