JUSTICE FOR JANITORS 2000--NEWS FROM THE PICKET LINES

www.justiceforjanitors.org

September 7, 2000 Update

As Labor Day celebrations wind up and Americans start focusing on the upcoming November elections, janitors around the country are beginning campaigns of our own. Using the spring victories of janitors in Los Angeles, Chicago, and other cities as inspiration, janitors who clean commercial office buildings in Denver, Hartford, San Diego, Philadelphia and Detroit are launching campaigns this fall to lift our families out of poverty.

Contract expirations in these major cities provide new opportunity to win better wages and benefits-in short, to win fairness. We'll be providing updates through www.justiceforjanitors.org and these email alerts.

Social Justice 101

One place where janitors are struggling for fairness right now is at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where janitors are among the lowest-paid custodians in our nation's capital. Their starting salary is $6.15 and the university requires workers to pay as much as $200 a month for health insurance. As students return for the fall semester, janitors are planning an education campaign to enlist student support for fair wages, hoping to form partnerships similar to those formed with students at Wesleyan University and Fairfield University in Connecticut.

We need YOUR help! Catholic University is refusing to negotiate a fair contract. Take a minute to send a postcard to the president of Catholic University, Father David M. O'Connell-tell him you support the janitors struggle for affordable health insurance and a living wage. Just go to: http://www.seiu.org/j4j/campaign_cua.cfm

Thanks for your continued support and interest. Join the fight!
