Thanks again for your interest. Here is an update on our activities and overwhelming success.
Since www.justiceforjanitors.org went "live" last month, janitors across the country in disputes with building contractors have been winning! We've been winning wage increases that average over $1.50 over three years, health care benefits for ourselves and our families, and a leg up on entry into the digital age. Take a look at a quick summary:
In LA, where it all began on April 3rd, janitors won the largest wage increases in the 15-year history of the Justice for Janitors campaign.
In New York City, it didn't even take a walkout, but a march by 10,000 residential building workers helped them reach a contract agreement that included 10 percent wage increases and a first-ever provision that includes subsidies for workers to purchase computers.
And in Chicago, suburban janitors rounded out the victory won earlier by downtown janitors in agreeing to a contract that includes a $1.35 wage hike over three years and health care for workers and their families in the third year.
The battle continues in San Diego! We need YOUR help to bring justice for janitors. After a 10-day hunger strike, and now in the fourth week of their strike, janitors are now gearing up for resumed contract negotiations with cleaning contractors. One of the building owners that controls the purse strings in San Diego is Jones Lang Lasalle.
Jones Lang Lasalle hauled in more than $813 million in revenues last year. Yet Jones Lang Lasalle is telling its cleaning contractors that it won't provide enough money for wage increases to lift janitors in San Diego out of poverty.
Call Jones Lang Lasalle at 1-800-527-2553 and tell them that every family needs decent health care coverage. With your help, the San Diego janitors could be back on the job, with better wages and basic benefits within days!
Thanks again.
