these is a personal summary of the latest news from Ecuador based on 6 press releases in Spanish from Pulsar: www.amarc.org/pulsar and a phone call. The translations will take a while, so this is in summary what happened:
Yesterday (friday) the uprising movement got the support from a sector of the military lead by colonel Gutierrez. We saw the pictures of the indigenas storming the National Parliament supported by military etc. A transitional governemnt was created involving Vargas (the military leader) and Gutierrez.
The things went fast and confusing, changing in a matter of hours. A military leader called Cabezas, joined the "new" government called (Junta civico-militar) replacing Gutierrez - this was done to 'solve internal divisions'. In fact what happened is that Cabezas detained Gutierrez and made the civic- military Junta explode.
Officially because he wanted to avoid a civil war, he managed to destitute president Jamil Muahad and the ex-vice president Noboa was declared new president of Ecuador in respect of the Consitution. So only the faces changed, the neoliberal policies and the economic crises remain.
The indigenas tried to continue the uprising in Quito, but lacking the support of the army, they decided to leave the city. They had been evicted from the Peoples Parliament by the army. The Peoples Parliament was officialy dissolved, but the struture of regional and local plenaries will probably remain. The indigenas are currently leaving Quito in bus and trucks. Their aim to install a peoples government slipped out of their hands for now but the uprising hasn't ended yet and the indigenas declared they will continue to resist. They need to discuss new strategies. The country is still paralysed, in crisis and the underlying causes of the crisis have not changed.
